I came across this summary of an earthquake that occured in the evening near La Puente in 1967...
"The next strong quake in the Whittier area was on the evening of June 15, 1967 centered East of Whittier. It had a magnitude of 4.1 and was felt as a rolling quake throughout much of the LA basin and parts of Orange County, knocking objects from shelves and causing minor damage. It may have been centered in the Puente Hills, possibly North of La Habra."
...Regardless, this was my very first earthquake... I was in bed - it was about 9:15 p.m., when it hit it was LOUD! My bed started sliding on the tile floor... I could not get over the sharp jolting and shaking and that loud deep rumbling, at first it sounded like rocks being jostled around in a barrel.... and when the shaking stopped - you could still hear the rumbling gradually fade. The West Puente Valley really felt it, Obviously an event which left an impression on a 10year old kid...
