I was 6 years old in the first grade at Florence Flanner Elementary School in La Puente and in Mrs. Meyers class. It was a Friday, and I recall all of us sitting in class as our school principal, Mr. Kerr entered the classroom. The principal was very stoic and shaken. He walked over to Mrs. Meyers and whispered into her ear and she in turn sat down as he spoke to us. He was visibly shaken, and as a child, to see your role model, your principal near tears, it will forever be burned in my memory. He spoke about the President of the United States had been assasinated... We were dismissed to go home... I remember my mother crying all weekend, I remember black & white TV. Stark black and white TV of the jet landing and returning his flag drapped coffin back to Washington.
I remember the funeral on black & white TV. Flags blowing in the wind. My mom was crying... and I knew this was very very sad.
